THE GHOSTWRITER
A washed-up writer needs cash fast, so she takes an unlikely job: ghostwriting her fan's suicide note. Olive Temple was the talk of the town in 2012. A member of the once-hip alt-lit community, she wrote fiction that acted as a veiled memoir of her life partying with celebrities and taking copious amounts of drugs. Now, she's divorced, broke, and hasn't written a word since. Her agent quits. Her famous friends are nowhere to be found, and she spends most of her time doom scrolling and getting drunk in her tiny New York apartment, living off her dwindling royalties. Desperate for money, she responds to a cryptic email offering to pay her an exorbitant amount for very little work. The job? Writing Walton Hanes' suicide note. Walton is an Olive Temple superfan and feels that only her voice can capture his final message to the world. But as they begin to work together, Olive learns there's much more to Walton's story than he's letting on. Soon, she finds herself ensnared in a web of lies and mystery where one false move could cost her what little she has left. THE GHOSTWRITER is a play in three acts, approximately 80 minutes long, featuring three actors and six characters. It zigzags between comedy and drama, and it tells a story of our dysfunctional relationship between the personas we project and the ones we keep hidden. *Equity members appearing with permission of Actors’ Equity Association without benefit of an Equity contract in this off-off Broadway production.
